Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers

The Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers consists of $8,000 -$10,000 in annual funding for up to four years, as well as ongoing training and development opportunities, mentorship from sitting public school educators, and participation in a statewide aspiring teachers network facilitated by the Charles Butt Foundation.

The Charles Butt Scholarship application period for the 2025-2026 academic year runs October 2024 – February 2025.

Selection Criteria

Charles Butt scholarship applicants must:

  • Be actively enrolled for 2024-2025 in the UTeach Dallas Teacher Certification Program seeking certification in:
    • Science 7-12, Science 4-8, Biology, Chemistry, Physics Certification
    • Mathematics 7-12, Mathematics 4-8 Certification
    • Computer Science Certification
  • Have a strong academic record and history of achievement
  • Have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and maintain that while a scholarship recipient
  • Have demonstrated peer or group leadership skills
  • Willing to participate in professional development, networking, and mentoring provided by the Charles Butt Foundation’s Raising Texas Teachers program
  • Committed to teaching in a majority-economically disadvantaged school (meaning more than 50% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch) OR in a shortage subject area (specifically math, science, bilingual, or special education) once you graduate and become a certified teacher.
  • Exemplify the following knowledge, skills, and values:
    • written communication, oral communication, collaboration, leadership, altruism, passion for education, equity-driven, belief in the power of teaching, academic achievement, persistence and continuous learning.
Support for Charles Butt Scholars

In addition to scholarship funding, the Raising Texas Teachers initiative will supplement the rigorous education scholars receive through partner programs by providing teacher candidates opportunities to benefit from ongoing professional development, mentoring and feedback from teachers and principals, and connections with fellow Charles Butt scholars across Texas.

This combination of education and support is designed to ensure teacher candidates practice and develop pedagogical skills in authentic classroom settings, observe masterful teaching in action, reflect on feedback from expert teachers and school leaders, and participate in a community that fosters professional growth.

• Professional development, including the annual Charles Butt Scholar Symposium & inclusion in an on-campus teaching club.

• Professional support before and after graduation from the Charles Butt Foundation.

• Connection with a network of passionate aspiring teachers from across the state.

Scholarship Benefits

All Charles Butt Scholars will receive the following forms of financial and professional support:

  • Annual scholarship support of $8,000 – $10,000 per year for up to four years
  • Mentorship from a local educator or principal
  • Participation in local and statewide cohort meetings of aspiring teachers
  • Invitation and funds to attend the annual Charles Butt Scholars Symposium
  • Inclusion in an on-campus teaching scholar club
  • Professional support as they near graduation
  • Access to an online community for scholars across the state to network
Ongoing Requirements

Charles Butt Scholars must:

  • Be actively enrolled for 2024-2025 in the UTeach Dallas Teacher Certification Program seeking certification in:
    • Science 7-12, Science 4-8, Biology, Chemistry, Physics Certification
    • Mathematics 7-12, Mathematics 4-8 Certification
    • Computer Science Certification
  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average;
  • Participate in Charles Butt Foundation professional development activities;
  • Receive a letter of recommendation for continuation from the program coordinator each year; and
  • Plan to teach in a high-needs classroom OR in a shortage subject area (specifically math, science, bilingual, or special education) in a Texas public school upon completion of the program.
Scholarship Timeline

October 2024
Application opens. Complete the Butt Scholarship Form and the UTD Required Form.

February 2025
Application closes.

March 2025
Charles Butt Foundation will notify you if you have been selected to move on to the final interview stage.

March-April 2025
Interviews conducted with scholarship finalists by the Charles Butt Foundation.

April 2025
Scholarship recipients notified by the Charles Butt Foundation.

Announcement of inaugural winners of the scholarship.
